Why do we smoke?

Smoking is strange behaviour.  Almost every smoker knows that it's bad for their health, but many smokers continue the habit for decades, each year experiencing a further decline in health and well-being.  50% of long-term smokers die prematurely from smoking related diseases which is a very worrying statistic.  Looked at rationally, smoking is quite disgustingand illogical.  It stains the teeth and the fingers, causes bad breath, and creates an unpleasant environment for non-smokers.

It must be pleasurable, though, otherwise nobody would put up with the negative side of smoking.  Most smokers admit that they enjoy cigarettes, and those that have managed to quit or stop smoking often feel that they have lost an old friend.

Tobacco is an addictive substance so it's understandable that people find it hard to quit.  Less understandable is what motivates people to take their first cigarette.  How many people realise that physically smoking is more addictive than Heroin! It takes only one cigarette to start the chain, which many find difficult to break.

What is behind that decision to start smoking?

Many people start smoking when they are teenagers.  The desire to fit in and be one of the 'crowd' is particularly strong during adolescence.  Of course, this desire is also present in adults and can be a motivating factor behind much human behaviour.

Young people may also feel that smoking makes them 'grown up' or it may be a form of rebellion against their parents and teachers.  Most young people are already aware of the dangers of smoking so lecturing them about how they are harming their health can be futile. Also when you are young and strong, your body has a better ability to fight off the affects of cigarettes - hwever it does not take too long before it does start to affect your health and well being.

Appealing advertising is also a big motivator in the desire to take up smoking.  Tobacco ads usually depict young healthy active people taking part in fun group activities.  The message is clear -- Smoke X brand and you can have this much fun too.

Adults are just as susceptible to popular images surrounding smoking.  They are usually self-aware enough to know that smoking will not be the deciding factor behind social acceptance, but there is still the powerful image of the smoker as the rebel -- cool and independent.  This can be alluring for some young adults.

You may think you ignore the adverts, but your brain absorbs this information everytime you see a clebrity smoker on TV or in a film, in a magazine etc.

Perhaps certain individuals are more drawn to smoking than others.  There is evidence that people with a long-term outlook on life are less likely to start smoking because they know that smoking will shorten their life span and cause future health problems. On the contrary, those with shorter outlooks are more likely to smoke.

Other people turn to smoking because they are looking for a way to relieve stress.

Why continue to smoke?

Smoking is an illusion - Irrespective of a cigarette, any stress in your life will still be present. All the cigarette does, is temporarily relieve the stress which is caused by the bodies craving for more nicotine. Once the smoker has a cigarette, they feel temporarily more relaxed.  If they were not craving the nicotine in the first place, then the stress they had to deal with, would not be magnified in this manner - so smoking makes you more stressed - daily stress + nicotine craving = more stress! - check your blood pressure.

You will always have something that will cause stress in your life, smoking will not help that go away. Non smokers have the same stress to deal with though physically and mentally they cope without the need for the cigarettes. Your body and brain needs oxygen to function, smoking reduces the oxygen in the bloodstream considerably.

We look for excuses to continue to smoke, when we know we should not. Does that not tell you something? Its a drug and your body has physical withdrawal cravings. This tricks your mind to continue to justify any reason why you should continue to smoke.

Most smokers will come to a point in life where they want to quit, due to health, financial or family reasons. This is when many start to realise the depth of their addiction - after many attempts to stop smoking fail, going 'cold turkey' only has a 5% success rate.

Bioresonance will help remove the physical withdrawal cravings, quickly and effectively.

Rather than focussing on what you will be missing if you were to stop smoking, focus on the positives, more energy, more money in your pocket, better health, better skin, the list goes on and on.

Now think of a list of the positives of continuing to smoke - are there any?
